Sunderland, of Tyne and Wear, North East England.
This city has history of inhabitance that dates back to 4,000 BC. However, it was not until the year 1100 that a small village on the river named 'Soender-land' was placed on the map. Sunderland was written into the history books when King Charles I had allies located in the city.
In 1831, Sunderland was host to a cholera epidemic that eventually killed 32,000 from around the country. Part of the English Civil War was actually fought on grounds near Sunderland. WWII brought German bombs to Sunderland, destroying some of the beautiful architecture such as the Victoria Hall.
As of today, Sunderland is a moderately sized city of 177,000. Not only is this city a major tourist stop, but it governs many modern day industries and is home to the University of Sunderland. Being a historically rich city, Sunderland boasts a vast array of interesting attractions. A few include Hylton Castle, St. Peter's church, Holy Trinity church, and St. Michael's church.
Music and art are alive and well in Sunderland. One could visit the Winter Gardens, a museum of pottery or perhaps the Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art. As for night life, the visitor will not be disappointed. Sunderland was recently voted a top city for a great night out. It houses 65 bars and 9 clubs.
